The goals of the Office of Rare Diseases Research (ORDR) are to identify, stimulate, coordinate and support research to respond to the needs of patients who have any one of the approximately 6,800 rare diseases known today. In 2011, ORDR was integrated into the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). As an integral part of NCATS, ORDR coordinates and supports rare diseases research, responds to research opportunities for rare diseases, and provides information on rare diseases.
As a national resource for molecular biology information, the National Center for Biotechnology Information's mission is to develop new information technologies to aid in the understanding of fundamental molecular and genetic processes that control health and disease.
